Cost

Good quality replacement windows are expensive. So too is a full restoration of heritage windows.  With the vast range of replacement windows available, and the many factors to consider, it is difficult to make a definitive cost comparison between the installation of replacement windows and the restoration of existing windows.

What I can tell you is that the cost of a full window restoration job will be approximately equivalent to the cost of installing a new good quality window.

Sometimes, a full restoration is not required. In such cases, the cost will be significantly lower than the cost of a new good quality window. When full restoration is required, costs can be spread out over a period of several years, since windows can be restored a few at a time.

It is important to remember that almost all windows built in the 1950s and earlier are made with old growth wood and are generally of higher quality than most replacement windows. The life cycle of old windows is far superior to replacement windows. Their durability has been proven, and energy efficiency and comfort can be vastly improved with restoration, weather stripping and a well-fit storm.
